+Marco Sartori Some of them do, some of them don't. What could happen is that you get a bit root, a stuck bit in memory either 0 or 1, everything processed by this part of memory will convert the original data to the original data with the value of the stuck bit (regardless if this is correct or not) and your files will be written to disk with the incorrect bit and this will happen every time with every file that uses that part of memory. And this is unfortunately not that uncommon, so use ECC memory on your NAS, always.

I believe that ECC memory is important to use if you're building something based on ZFS, because of the way ZFS works.  Other forms of NAS setups don't necessarily need it.

+dgevert WHAT?! No?! I don't think you understand what ECC memory does. Only difference between ZFS and other "dumb" file systems when it come to ECC memory is that ZFS might tell you when your ram fucked you in the ass! Other filesystems get all the same errors they just don't know it until you're sitting there with corrupt files.
