* BBK Electronics

https://www.fastcompany.com/company/bbk-electronics

"In fall 2016, Oppo and Vivo shipped a combined 39 million smartphones for the quarter, nabbing the top two spots in the Chinese market

for the first time ever, according to IDC—and selling nearly five times as many devices during the same period as Apple, which saw its

share plummet 34% year over year. What’s most remarkable is that Oppo and Vivo are subsidiaries of the same parent, BBK Electronics,

which has seen their combined market share shoot up more than 1,000% since 2012.

By targeting what are called Tier 3 to 5 cities—less developed, more rural areas, considered smaller by Chinese standards, but which

are still larger than Chicago or Houston in many cases—with solid handsets designed for value-minded consumers, BBK came to dominate

China through a network of more than 200,000 independent retailers, which take attractive commissions for each sale in this

historically untapped market.

Next up is BBK’s OnePlus, a younger brand marketing higher-end devices abroad through online channels, including in the U.S., Europe,

and India. What’s the strategy behind all three brands? OnePlus cofounder and CEO Pete Lau says “there’s no joint, centralized

strategy”; BBK, rather, mandates they operate independently—even if that means competing with each other for the same resources. “China

is probably the most competitive smartphone market in the world,” Lau says. “But we believe the competition globally is about to heat

up.”"

* Talk of tech innovation is bullsh*t. Shut up and get the work done – says Linus Torvalds

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/02/15/think_different_shut_up_and_work_harder_says_linus_torvalds/

"Torvalds said he subscribes to the view that successful projects are 99 per cent perspiration, and one per cent innovation."

" Process problems are a pain in the ass. You never, ever want to have process problems "

Stagefright [1] and Dirty COW [2]

Google Services:
"It sounds like you have no idea how deep Google's MADA contracts with OEMs already go. =) Shipping devices

with Google services included requires you sign over your entire business decisionmaking to Google: They have

approval/veto power over every single device and software update you release that contains their services,

and they also forbid you to sell any devices running Android that don't contain their services, just to make

sure you don't try to exert any independence on the side.
Android isn't open source, except in the hearts and minds of fanboys everywhere. =)"
"Seems like Free Software that propelled early Internet pioneers served its purpose and those companies are

turning their backs on it - first with Apple, GCC->LLVM, now with Google, Linux->Fuchsia "
"They haven't disappointed with Fuschia which appears to be entirely copyleft:
https://fuchsia.googlesource.com/magenta/+/master/LICENSE https://fuchsia.googlesource.com/fonts/

+/master/LICENSE"
"The status quo right now among android hardware vendors is to violate the GPL, and they have faced few if

any repercussions for doing so. I wonder if Fuscia is sort of viewed as the way forward to addressing that."
"binary blobs-
You can release code and still violate the GPL in other ways. For example, there are binary blobs out there

and the GPL is pretty unequivocal on this point: "The source code for a work means the preferred form of the

work for making modifications to it.
http://yarchive.net/comp/linux/gpl_modules.html
Releasing binary blobs is definitionally not releasing the source, though."
"Or they've just had it with Linux and all of its baggage.
reply
The OS Fuchsia, including the kernel Magenta, appears to be open source, mostly under BSD 3-clause, with

parts of the kernel under MIT and similar licenses.
https://fuchsia.googlesource.com/fuchsia/+/master/LICENSE
https://fuchsia.googlesource.com/magenta/+/master/LICENSE
https://fuchsia.googlesource.com/"
"There's a ton of good reasons to replace Android beyond licensing. Security being the largest one. Fuchsia

is designed with security in mind from the ground up, Android arguably is not (at least not from the sense of

what is considered security today)."
